Perceived stigma among the family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease

Introduction: Family caregivers are the most important source of care for patients and the health care system. Awareness of behavioral problems in people with Alzheimer's disease and ways to control stress can help reduce the perceived stigma of family caregivers in Alzheimer's patients.
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the perceived stigma of family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients in Tehran, Iran, 2015.
Methods: This descriptive-cross sectional study was on a continence sample of 66 family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients referred to the Alzheimer's Association, Tehran, Iran, 2015. The data collection tool was a demographic questionnaire and a stigma impact scale (SIS)that self-reporting was completed by research samples. Data were analyzed by descriptive and analytic T-test and analysis of variance.
Results: the result showed the rejection of the community with the mean ±standard deviation of 31.05 ± 7.07 had the highest meanings. The mean± SD of perceived stigma in family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients was 44.3 ± 8.61. Marital status and economic status were statistically significant (p <0.05), and the mean scores of single persons were higher than married ones.
Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, the fear of rejection of the community is the most important type of perceived perception. Also, it should be planned for family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients to provide appropriate health care services, and step by step to reduce and prevent caregivers' problems |
