Abstract:   (5255 Views)

Introduction : Premature and low birth weight infants are among the high risk population in the community and after discharge, they are more vulnerable than full-term infants and need more care compared to term infants.

Objective : The aim of discharge planning is preparing families for the care of premature infants at home after discharge

Method : A randomized controlled trial study was conducted on 92 mothers of preterm infants (gestational age: 32 -36 weeks) in neonatal ICU of Tabriz Alzahra hospital in 2013. discharge planning was done for intervention group and mothers of control group received routine and usual cares. Maternal satisfaction was measured in both admission and discharge time in two groups by using Parental satisfaction questionnaire (Likert scale) . Data analysis was performed using the T-test and X2 test.

Results : The mean scores of the intervention and control groups before the intervention, and after discharge planning were 39.60 and 34.58, respectively, which was not statistically significant, but after the intervention difference between the two groups, before and after, were 45.95 and 36.80in the control test and a statistically significant difference was observed (P=0.000).

Conclusion : Providing discharge planning increase satisfaction among preterm infants' mothers. Discharge planning is a fundamental element to facilitate transtion of infants from acute care units to home. Therefore implementation of discharge planning has the positive impact on patient's outcomes and commitment and family adaptation after returning home.
